I did one here, but let’s do it again!
Usually Varric hated waiting while someone read his work. He much preferred to be far, far away while they scanned the pages and made their judgments and thought their critiques or inevitably pulled at a face some likely terrible prose.
Doubly so when that person was the Seeker.
Her expressive face contorting this way and that while she read. Sometimes mumbling under her breath as she re-read a passage, or crying out indignantly when she reached a part she did not particularly like.
However, it was the last chapter and she had immediately turned and sat on the edge of his bed when he’d handed it to her. Varric had briefly thought about leaving the room altogether, but that seemed a little silly. So he waited. But he resolutely kept from looking at her while she read, at least until she gasped out loud. Then he glanced up just in time to see her turn woeful brown eyes on him.
“’I thought you didn’t want me,’” she quoted out loud. “How could he think such a thing! All she has done has proven that she loves him, and only him!”
He snorted. “Keep reading.”
“’I have only ever wanted you.’“ She gasped again, clutched the manuscript to her chest. “This is all I have ever wanted!”
“Happy to oblige you then, Seeker.” He laughed and turned back to his desk, pretended to shuffle some papers while she finished the last few paragraphs.
“Varric?” she asked carefully after a moment, suddenly at his elbow.
“Yes?”
“May I say that.. this feels different than the other chapters. Not in a bad way, it is just that the tone is not the same.”
He shrugged, pressed his lips together. “I don’t know, maybe I just have some new inspiration?”
Cassandra seemed to mull that over for a moment before gently laying the manuscript down on his desk. It was an almost reverent gesture.
“Varric?” she asked again. He glanced up at her, watched as she sucked in a deep breath. “She would be a fool not to want him.”
He could only blink at her dumbly, trying to process what she had said. He watched as she turned on her heel and head toward the door, only to leave without another word. Varric finally came back to himself when the door clicked shut.
“Cassandra, wait!” he called as his chair crashed to the floor in his rush to catch her.
